How To Build A Crib Mattress Porch Swing

DIY Crib Mattress Porch Swing: A Cozy Retreat

Upcycling a crib mattress into a porch swing is a fun and budget-friendly way to add a touch of whimsy and comfort to your porch. Here’s how to make your own!

Materials

  • Crib mattress
  • (4) 2x4s, 8 feet long
  • (2) 2x3s, 8 feet long
  • (1) 1×6, 8 feet long
  • (4) 1x3s, 8 feet long
  • Sturdy rope (amount depends on your desired hanging length)
  • Heavy-duty eye hooks
  • Wood screws (2-inch and 3-inch)
  • Wood glue
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Saw (miter saw or circular saw recommended)
  • Sander
  • Stain or paint (optional)

Instructions

  1. Build the base frame:

    • Cut two of the 2x4s to 54.5 inches and two to 27.5 inches.
    • Use 3-inch screws to assemble into a rectangle (the longer boards are the length).
  2. Add seat supports:

    • Cut two 27.5 inch pieces from the 2x3s.
    • Attach them inside the frame, 3/4 inch from the top, using screws and wood glue. These support the seat slats.
    • Add an additional 2×3 down the center for extra support.
  3. Install the seat slats:

    • Cut the 1×6 into four 50.5-inch pieces (width of your mattress).
    • Place them across the support beams and secure with screws and wood glue. Leave small gaps between the slats.
  4. Build the posts:

    • Cut the 1x3s into eight 20-inch lengths.
    • Form four posts by gluing and screwing two pieces together into an “L” shape.
  5. Attach the posts:

    • Attach a post to each corner of the frame using screws and glue.
  6. Top rails:

    • Cut the remaining 2x4s to 59.5 inches for the front and back top railing (allowing for overhang).
    • Secure them to the tops of the posts using screws and glue.
  7. Optional side rails:

    • Consider adding side and back rails from 1x3s for style or safety. Plank-style or a decorative “X” design are popular.
  8. Drilling for rope:

    • Measure and mark where you’ll hang the swing. Drill holes large enough for your rope through the overhanging top rails.
  9. Sanding and finishing:

  • Sand the entire swing smooth.
  • Apply stain or paint in your desired color. Seal to protect it from the elements.
  1. Hang and Enjoy!
  • Thread the rope through the holes and secure to sturdy ceiling hooks, or a strong tree branch using proper hanging techniques.
  • Add cushions, pillows, and throws for ultimate relaxation.

Tips

  • Safety first: Ensure your hanging point is secure. Consider a weight test before using the swing.
  • Customize: Get creative with paint colors, side panel designs, and comfy accessories.
  • Involve the kids: Let them help paint or choose fabrics for a sense of ownership.

Enjoy your new upcycled porch swing—the perfect spot for lazy afternoons and stargazing!
