How to Get Blood Out of a Memory Foam Mattress

Accidentally spill blood on your memory foam mattress? Don’t panic! Getting those stains out is possible, especially if you act quickly.

Important Note: Memory foam is sensitive to harsh chemicals and heat. Always test cleaning solutions on a hidden area first, and avoid using hot water.

What You’ll Need:

  • Cold water
  • Clean cloths (white or lightly colored to avoid dye transfer)
  • Dish soap
  • Baking soda
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • Spray bottle
  • Vacuum cleaner (optional)

Instructions for Fresh Blood Stains:

  1. Blot, Don’t Rub: Gently blot the excess blood with a cold, damp cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper.
  2. Mild Dish Soap Solution: Mix a few drops of dish soap with cold water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution, wring it out well, and blot the stain. Repeat as necessary.
  3. Rinse and Dry: Blot the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove any soap residue. Allow the mattress to air dry completely.

Instructions for Dried Blood Stains:

  1. Baking Soda Paste: Mix a paste of baking soda and cold water (1:2 ratio). Apply it to the stain and let it sit for 30-60 minutes.
  2. Blot and Dry: Gently blot the paste away with a cold, damp cloth. Air-dry the mattress completely
  3. Hydrogen Peroxide (if needed): If the stain persists, mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide (3%) and cold water in a spray bottle. Lightly spritz the stain, let it sit for a few minutes, then blot with a clean, damp cloth. Air-dry completely.

Tips for Success

  • Act Fast: The sooner you address the stain, the better your chances of removing it.
  • Use a Mattress Protector: Invest in a high-quality mattress protector to safeguard against future stains and spills.
  • Vacuum: Once the area is dry, you can vacuum to remove any lingering residue from the cleaning products.
  • Avoid Sunlight: Don’t dry the mattress in direct sunlight, as this could cause discoloration.

Extra Notes:

  • For stubborn stains, you might need to repeat the process several times.
  • If the stain is very old or extensive, consider professional cleaning services.
