Methods to Make a Mattress Protector
Method 1: Easy Fitted Sheet Style
- Choose your fabric: Opt for a durable, washable fabric like cotton, flannel, or a blend. Waterproof fabrics like PUL are excellent if you need extra protection.
- Measure and cut: Measure your mattress (length, width, depth). Add seam allowance (at least 1 inch) to your measurements before cutting.
- Create corners: Cut squares out of each fabric corner to form fitted edges.
- Sew the corners: Pin the cut edges right sides together and sew. Trim excess fabric.
- Hem and elastic: Fold over a wide hem along the entire edge of the fabric. Leave a small gap to insert elastic. Thread elastic through and secure the ends.
Method 2: Waterproof Encasement Style
- Fabric selection: Choose a waterproof fabric like PUL or vinyl for the top and sides. Use a breathable fabric for the bottom panel for better airflow.
- Measure and cut: Measure your mattress (length, width, depth). Add seam allowances to your measurements for all pieces.
- Zip it up: Position a long zipper along one edge of the waterproof top piece. Pin in place with right sides facing in and sew. Repeat for the matching side panel.
- Attach sides and bottom: Pin the side panels to the top, ensuring the zipper is in the correct position. Sew around three sides. Attach the breathable bottom panel.
- Finish: Turn the protector right side out. It should fit snugly around your mattress, with the zipper on the underside.
Tips
- Pre-wash fabrics: Prevent shrinkage after making your protector.
- Double stitch: Use strong stitching for seams, especially for waterproof protectors.
- Extra protection: Add a layer of absorbent material between the top and bottom layers of your protector.
