How To Repair Air Mattress Beds

Has your air mattress decided it needs a vacation? Don’t deflate just yet! Here’s a simple way to locate and patch those pesky leaks:

Step 1: The Great Leak Hunt

  • Inflate it up: Pump your air mattress up so it’s firm. This makes the leak easier to find.
  • Listen closely: Move your ear near the surface, listening for a hissing sound—that’s escaping air!
  • Soapy water to the rescue: If you can’t hear it, mix dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Spray sections of the mattress; the leak will make bubbles.
  • Mark the spot: Use a pen or a piece of tape to mark the leak clearly.

Step 2: Patching Things Up

  • Deflate and dry: Let the air out of your mattress and dry the area around the leak completely.
  • Patch kit power: Most air mattresses come with a patch kit. If not, vinyl repair kits work well too.
  • Cut and clean: Cut a patch slightly bigger than the hole. Clean the patch and the area around the leak with rubbing alcohol.
  • Glue time: Follow the instructions on your patch kit or glue. Usually, you’ll apply glue to both the patch and the mattress. Let it get tacky before pressing the patch on firmly.
  • Weight and wait: Place a heavy book on the patch and let it dry completely (follow the glue’s instructions for drying time).

Step 3: Test Drive

  • Inflate and wait: Pump your mattress back up and let it sit for a few hours. If it stays firm, your repair is a success!

Extra Tips:

  • Flocked surfaces: If the leak is on the soft, velvety side, you may need to lightly sand the area before applying the patch.
  • Temporary fix: In a pinch, duct tape can work for a night or two.
  • Beyond repair: If the leak is along a seam or a large tear, it may be time for a new air mattress.

Remember: Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific guidance on your air mattress model.
