Ever notice how your air mattress seems to soften overnight, even though you haven’t opened the valve? Here’s why this happens, and what you can do about it:
1. It’s New! (Material Stretch)
- Brand new air mattresses are made of vinyl (PVC), which naturally needs a bit of time to reach its full size.
- The first few nights, the material stretches out under pressure. This might feel like a slow leak, but don’t worry, it’s normal.
2. Changing Temperatures
- Air expands when it’s warm and shrinks when it’s cold (remember science class!).
- During the night, if the temperature drops, the air inside your mattress takes up less space, making the mattress feel softer.
3. The Weight of It All
- Our bodies create pressure points on the air mattress. This can cause the material to subtly shift and stretch over time.
- This is especially common with heavier individuals or with extra movement on the mattress.
What Can You Do?
- It’s new? Be patient. After a few nights of use, the vinyl should stop stretching so much.
- Top it off. A quick burst of air before bed can compensate for temperature changes and normal stretch.
- Check that valve. Make sure it’s fully closed after inflation – a slow leak is a different problem entirely!
Important Note: Air mattresses will eventually wear out and develop leaks. But with a little knowledge, you can prevent the sensation of deflation during those first few nights or when the weather changes.
